No other sport in the world is loved as much as golf. As such, the golf industry worldwide has been operating golf courses and producing a vast array of golf equipment to fulfill this demand. America from the west and Japan from the east, have managed to develop the leading golf brands among all manufacturers. What is the difference between American and Japanese golf brands?
Traditionally, golf has been played casually in the U.S. Therefore, even 5-10 years ago, clubs from American brands were somewhat inferior compared to products coming from Asia. Products were primarily designed for casual play and more accessible to players of all ages. But with the emerging growth in the golf industry, product design and technology also began to advance.
Golf brands that best represent American manufacturers are Titleist, Nike Golf, and PING.
In Asia, golf’s popularity only began around 10 years ago. It represented a sport enjoyed by affluent people with financial and leisure freedom. And at that time, compared to other Asian countries, Japan was more open to Western cultures and began to establish its own brand of golf by incorporating their traditional craftsmanship with product development.
Brands like Mizuno and Honma were born and began exports to the west. At a higher price point, these brands offered superior craftsmanship, quality and advanced technology like “forged irons”.
Currently, Japanese brands have shifted their product development towards the younger players with casual specs and bright designs. In the future, American brands will emphasize more on the technical aspects while the Japanese brands will focus more on the design aspects of product development. Meanwhile, European and Korean manufacturers are also developing products that are unique to their own brand of golf. As more and more products are introduced worldwide, there are sure to be more choice for the golfers.
